APSAC Advisor

The APSAC Advisor is a peer reviewed quarterly news journal for professionals in the field of child abuse and neglect. The APSAC Advisor provides succinct, data-based, practice-oriented articles that keep interdisciplinary professionals informed of the latest developments in policy and practice the field of child maltreatment. It is designed to highlight best practices in the field and publish original articles and current information about child maltreatment for professionals from a variety of backgrounds including medicine, law, law enforcement, social work, child protective services, psychology, public health and prevention in the U.S.

Pathway to Hope: A Tribal Community-Based Empowerment Curriculum to Heal Child Sexual Abuse

The author describes Pathway to Hope (PTH), a sexual abuse primary prevention curriculum funded through a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice, Office for Victims of Crime to the Tribal Law and Policy Institute, and adapted to work within the specific culture, community history, and traditional values and practices for the Alaskan Native Tribal community.


Adolescent Mothers Programs to Improve Child Outcomes and Prevent Child Maltreatment

The author discusses the implementation and outcomes associated with a hospital-based teen parenting program that includes monthly visits during an infant’s first year of life, separate medical visits for the infant and the parent, and support services for the family. The unique risks for child maltreatment by adolescent parents and the special psychosocial issues they face are also reviewed.


Effects of Clergy Reporting Laws on Child Maltreatment Report Rates

The authors used child maltreatment reports from the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System to compare the report and confirmation rates for 213 large U.S. counties while comparing their state laws pertaining to reporting requirements for clergy.


Application of Evidence-Based Therapies to Children in Foster Care:A Survey of Program Developers

(Amy J. L. Baker, PhD, Elissa J. Brown, PhD, Mel Schneiderman, PhD, Komal Sharma-Patel, PhD, and Lauren M. Berrill, BA)

To assess the evidence supporting mental health treatment for children in foster care, the authors surveyed 75 program developers of evidence-based and effective treatments about research conducted and the extent to which they could address ten issues essential for the treatment of children in foster care.
